Supporting Research-Led Field Training in Georgia and the South Caucasus

Past to Present Archaeology has maintained a longstanding professional interest in the archaeological landscapes of Georgia and the wider South Caucasus. Through previous fieldwork and research engagement in the region, we have developed a strong appreciation of its cultural heritage and the importance of well-structured, research-led archaeological training.

High-quality field schools play an important role in developing the next generation of archaeologists. When embedded within clearly defined research frameworks and delivered to robust professional standards, they provide meaningful excavation experience while contributing positively to wider academic objectives.

We are therefore pleased to confirm that Past to Present Archaeology has formed a professional partnership with Historic World, an independent Georgian archaeological organisation established in 2023, in support of its 2026 international field school programmes in Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Historic World was founded to develop academically grounded archaeological training initiatives rooted in active research contexts. Operating within local and regional frameworks, the organisation works to maintain international professional standards while engaging responsibly with the archaeological record of the South Caucasus.

Our organisations share aligned values in relation to methodological rigour, training quality, and responsible field practice. Members of the Past to Present Archaeology team may contribute to aspects of field supervision and training where appropriate, and we continue to maintain professional dialogue and collaboration in relation to archaeological work in the region.

The projects currently being delivered by Historic World include:

  • The Manglisi Field School (Georgia)
  • The Gadir-dere Research Project (Azerbaijan)

Both projects are structured to provide participants with research-led excavation experience within clearly defined academic frameworks.

All project administration, bookings, safeguarding procedures, participant agreements, and financial arrangements are managed directly by Historic World as the delivering organisation.

We look forward to continued professional engagement and collaborative research development within Georgia and the wider South Caucasus.
